Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. Nelson uses an array of treatment techniques and exercise programs to correct the underlying problem. The assessment and treatment are hands-on and one-on-one. So rest assured that you won't be left in the room with a heat pack!

Some of these health conditions can include problems affecting:

  • bones, joints and soft tissue - e.g. neck pain, back pain, sports injuries, shoulder pain
  • brain or nervous system - e.g. movement problems resulting from a stroke, multiple sclerosis
  • lungs and breathing - e.g. cystic fibrosis

Physiotherapists focus on the individual aspects of the patients injury or illness and provide many approaches to help restore normal functions.

These include:

  • education and advice - physiotherapists give general advice about things that can affect daily life activities, such as posture and correct lifting or carrying techniques to help prevent injuries
  • movement, tailored exercise and physical activity advice - exercises may be recommended to improve your general health and mobility, and to strengthen specific parts of your body. These may include the use of extra tools such as resistance bands or foam rollers.
  • manual therapy - physiotherapists may use their hands and soft tissue techniques to help relieve pain and stiffness, and to encourage better movement of the body.
